Keep your home safe from burglary

Learn how you can prevent thieves from targeting your home

Oct. 17, 2008 (MINNEAPOLIS)   Everyone knows that residential burglaries are a serious problem.  But did you know that the best defense against burglary is prevention? That’s why the Minneapolis Police Department wants to make sure homeowners and renters develop good home security habits.  You can make your home safer by practicing these simple security tips:

·         Lock it!  Keep doors and windows locked while you’re home—even when you’re in your yard or garage—and away. Most burglars get in through an unlocked door or window.

·         Don’t leave “easy targets” in plain sight.  Keep purses, wallets, computers and other valuables out of view.

·         Don’t leave keys outside your home.  Burglars know where to look for these “hidden” keys.

·         Turn lights on.  At night or when you’re away for a longer time, leave indoor and outdoor lights on.

·         Keep the view clear. Trim shrubs and trees around your home so that neighbors can see into your yard. Use see-through fencing around your backyard.

·         Put away “burglary tools”.  Lock up ladders and tools after you use them, so a thief can’t use them to break into your home.
