NEIGHBORHOOD RESIDENTS HONORED

In July, two pit bulls attacked a mail carrier in the 3300 Block of Colfax Avenue North with the mail carrier ending up with 41 wounds. Three neighborhood residents came to the aid of the mail carrier by trying to beat the dogs back using yard signs, a bat and a car. The dogs were shot and killed when they charged police.

The three residents were honored at their block party on National Night Out by the US Postal Department with plaques noting their heroism in saving the mail carrier.

The pit bulls’ owners have been charged in the attack on the mail carrier. Animal control officers have declared the two pit bulls, posthumously, to be dangerous. The owners could be barred from owning a dog for five years if they ever have another dog that gets the same declaration. Also, city prosecutors filed a criminal charge “harm caused by a dog” against the owners. The penalty could be up to a $1,000 fine and up to 90 days in jail. Other fines and citations could total $375.
